Атеросклероз: причины, симптомы, профилактика и современные подходы к лечению

Atherosclerosis is a chronic disease of the blood vessels in which cholesterol, lipids, and other substances gradually accumulate within the arterial walls, forming atherosclerotic plaques. As the disease progresses, the lumen of the vessels can narrow, limiting normal blood flow and increasing the risk of serious cardiovascular complications.

The main causes of atherosclerosis

The development of atherosclerosis is associated with a combination of factors. Among the most common causes are elevated blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, insufficient physical activity, and a diet high in saturated fat.

Age also plays a role, as arterial walls undergo structural changes over time. Additional risk factors include excess body weight, glucose metabolism disorders, and a family history.

How the disease develops:
In the early stages, damage to the inner lining of the artery promotes lipid accumulation. Gradually, a plaque composed of fatty deposits, inflammatory cells, and connective tissue forms in the vascular wall.

As the plaque grows, the artery's lumen can become narrower. If the surface of an unstable plaque is damaged or ruptured, the body can form a thrombus. This can dramatically reduce or completely block blood flow.

Symptoms of atherosclerosis:
In its early stages, atherosclerosis often proceeds without noticeable symptoms. Clinical manifestations depend on which vessels are affected.

Coronary artery disease can cause chest pain or discomfort, shortness of breath, and decreased exercise tolerance. Cerebral atherosclerosis can be associated with speech, vision, and coordination problems, as well as other neurological symptoms.
